A weekend in Saratoga Springs

This guide is for first-time visitors with a weekend in Saratoga Springs and for locals planning a weekend for guests. It assumes two full days, most of it on foot, with a short drive or two. It works in any season, with notes on what changes in summer.

Before you go

Timing shapes everything here. From late July through Labor Day, the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course and the SPAC season fill hotels and restaurants, and prices rise. The rest of the year, Saratoga Springs is much easier to book. Reserve dinner ahead any weekend in summer, and plan to park once and walk. From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day in 2026, city garages charged $2 an hour.

Day one: downtown, the park and the springs

Spend the first day on foot in the center of the city.

Morning

Start at the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center, 297 Broadway, for maps and a springs guide. Cross Broadway into Congress Park. Taste Congress Spring under its pavilion, look in at the Canfield Casino, home of the Saratoga Springs History Museum, and ride the old wooden carousel if it is running.

Midday

Walk up Broadway through downtown. Browse Northshire Saratoga, the independent bookstore at 424 Broadway, and pick up lunch at Putnam Market, 431 Broadway. If it is a Saturday between May and October, detour to the farmers market at High Rock Park, and taste the springs there while you are at it.

Afternoon

Walk east along Circular Street and Union Avenue through the historic East Side, past the Batcheller Mansion Inn at 20 Circular Street and the big Victorians of Union Avenue. It is about 20 minutes to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame at 191 Union Avenue, across from the track.

Evening

Have dinner on Phila Street, where Hattie’s at 45 Phila serves Southern cooking. Next door, Caffe Lena at 47 Phila books folk and acoustic music most nights.

Day two: the state park and the lake

The second day needs a car or a bike.

Morning

Drive to Saratoga Spa State Park and walk part of the Geyser Trail, about 2.9 miles, past the Island Spouter and the iron-stained tufa of Orenda Spring. Bring a cup for the springs. The Saratoga Automobile Museum at 110 Avenue of the Pines is a good stop for car fans.

Afternoon

Head east on Union Avenue to Saratoga Lake. Have lunch with a lake view at Lago by Druthers, 550 Union Avenue, then drive the east shore on Route 9P for the views, or stop for ice cream at Ugly Ice Cream at Brown’s Beach, 511 Route 9P.

Late afternoon

On the way back, walk the West Side’s Beekman Street Arts District or wander Skidmore’s campus, where the Tang Teaching Museum is at 815 North Broadway.

If it is summer

Swap in one of these:

  • A day at the races. In 2026 the meet ran July 3 through September 7 with first post at 1:10 p.m.
  • An evening at SPAC, with a picnic on the lawn for New York City Ballet in July or the Philadelphia Orchestra in August.
  • Early morning at the track to watch workouts, a local habit.

If it is winter

Downtown’s holiday season starts with the Victorian Streetwalk, scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2026. Chowderfest takes over Broadway on a Saturday in early February; it was February 7 in 2026. The winter farmers market meets Saturday mornings at the Lincoln Baths in the state park.

Where to stay

For a walkable weekend, stay on Broadway. The Adelphi Hotel is at 365 Broadway. For a quieter stay near SPAC, The Gideon Putnam is inside the state park.

Good to know

Many lake businesses and some downtown restaurants change hours after Labor Day. Call ahead in the off-season.
