Interlaken

Interlaken is a townhouse community on the east side of Saratoga Springs, set around Lake Lonely between the racetrack and Saratoga Lake. The homes are attached townhouses, many with wraparound porches and two-car garages, on private roads with walking paths. What sets Interlaken apart from most of the city’s neighborhoods is the shared list of amenities run by the homeowners association: a clubhouse, an outdoor pool, tennis and pickleball courts, a putting green and a shared beach and dock on Lake Lonely. The name goes back further than the houses. Smith’s Interlaken was one of the Saratoga Lake area’s gambling “lake houses,” open from 1939 until it was auctioned off in 1940.

Where it is

Interlaken is off Union Avenue (Route 9P) east of the Northway, in the stretch where the road runs from the racetrack out toward Saratoga Lake. Saratoga Race Course, Saratoga National Golf Club and the north end of Saratoga Lake are all a few minutes away by car. Union Avenue leads straight back toward downtown. It is inside Saratoga Springs.

What to know if you’re moving here

Interlaken is for people who want the amenities and the lake access without the yard work. The HOA is the defining feature.

  • Homes are townhouses, typically two or three bedrooms with two and a half baths, according to recent sale and rental listings.
  • The HOA covers the shared amenities and, per rental listings in the community, lawn care and snow removal. Get the current fee and the association’s rules in writing before you make an offer.
  • Lake Lonely access means kayaks and canoes, not powerboats. Anyone who wants a boat slip needs Saratoga Lake instead.
  • Short-term rentals during the summer meet are common in the community, so some neighbors change every August.
  • Schools are in the Saratoga Springs City School District. Confirm the elementary assignment on the district’s zone map.
  • Downtown is a drive, not a walk, though the track is close enough to bike in summer.

What to do if you’re visiting

Most visitors to Interlaken are here for the racing season in a rented townhouse. The neighborhood is a base, and the things to do are just outside it.

  • Saratoga Race Course, run by the New York Racing Association, is at 267 Union Avenue, a short drive west.
  • Saratoga National Golf Club is at 458 Union Avenue. Book tee times well ahead in summer.
  • For dinner on the water, Lago by Druthers took over the former 550 Waterfront space at 550 Union Avenue on Saratoga Lake.
  • If your rental comes with lake access, bring a kayak or paddleboard for Lake Lonely.
