Congress Park: a guide to Saratoga’s downtown park

This guide is for anyone spending time in Congress Park, the green space at the south end of Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs. It covers what is in the park, how to use it through the year, and what is nearby. The park is small enough to cross in five minutes, but it holds a lot of the city’s history.

Where it is

Congress Park sits where Broadway meets Spring Street and Circular Street, at the south end of downtown in Saratoga Springs. The East Side begins across Circular Street, and Union Avenue starts at the park’s eastern edge and runs to the racetrack. The park and the Canfield Casino together form a National Historic Landmark district, and the park is also part of the Union Avenue Historic District.

What is in the park

The park packs a lot into a few acres.

Congress Spring

Congress Spring was discovered in 1792 and became the center of the resort village that grew into the city. Its water was bottled and sold around the world and was the most famous of the Saratoga waters. The spring still runs under a covered pavilion in the park, and you can drink from it. Columbian Spring and the small cast-iron Deer Park Spring are nearby.

The Canfield Casino

The brick Canfield Casino, a former gambling house, is the park’s main building. It now houses the Saratoga Springs History Museum and is rented out for weddings and events.

The carousel

The park’s wooden carousel was built more than 115 years ago, according to the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center. It is a favorite with young children, and rides are inexpensive. Check the season before you promise a ride, since it does not run year-round.

The ponds and paths

Paved paths loop around ponds and lawns, with benches along the way. The park is a common spot for photos, a lunch break from Broadway, and an evening walk.

Through the year

Congress Park changes with the seasons.

• In summer, Discover Saratoga lists a free, family-friendly concert series in the park in July and August.
• In race season, the park is the start of the walk down Union Avenue to the track, about 20 minutes on foot.
• In fall, the park’s trees turn and the crowds thin, which makes it a good time to visit the museum.
• In winter, the paths stay open for walks, and downtown’s holiday events, including the Victorian Streetwalk on Broadway in December, are steps away.

Parking and access

Street parking on Broadway and Spring Street goes fast. The Putnam Street garage between Spring and Putnam streets is the closest city garage, and in 2026 the city charged $2 an hour there from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with free permits for city residents. Outside that season, the garage is free with time limits. The park’s main paths are paved.

A visit to the park combines easily with the rest of downtown.

• Across Broadway, the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center at 297 Broadway has maps, springs guides and walking tours.
• At the corner of Putnam and Spring streets, Hathorn Spring No. 1 is a short walk from the park.
• On Circular Street, the Batcheller Mansion Inn at number 20 is the first stop on many architecture walks.
• For lunch, Phila Street is a few minutes north, with Hattie’s at 45 Phila and Sweet Mimi’s Cafe & Bakery at 47 Phila.

Good to know

Events and weddings sometimes close parts of the Canfield Casino and its grounds. Check the history museum’s hours before a special trip.
