Saratoga Springs with kids

This guide is for parents and grandparents planning time in Saratoga Springs with children, whether you live here or are visiting for a weekend. It focuses on things that are cheap or free, easy to reach, and good for short attention spans, with notes on which ones work best in which season.

Easy wins downtown

Downtown Saratoga Springs is compact enough to cover with a stroller, and a few stops keep most kids happy.

Congress Park

Congress Park, at the south end of Broadway, has paved paths, ponds and a wooden carousel that the city’s visitor center says was built more than 115 years ago. Rides are inexpensive. Kids also like tasting Congress Spring under its pavilion, mostly for the faces they make afterward. Check whether the carousel is running before you promise a ride, since it is seasonal.

The farmers market

The Saratoga Farmers’ Market at High Rock Park runs Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings from May through October. Prepared food, baked goods and the springs at High Rock Park make it an easy family outing. In winter, the Saturday market moves indoors to the Lincoln Baths in the state park.

Treats

For ice cream, Dairy Haus Ice Cream lists an address at 476 Maple Avenue. For breakfast with kids, Sweet Mimi’s Cafe & Bakery on Phila Street is an easy stop.

Saratoga Spa State Park

The state park is the best place in the city to let kids run.

• The Island Spouter near Geyser Creek sprays mineral water out of a mound of hardened minerals, and it is a reliable hit with children.
• Paved paths around the Hall of Springs and the reflecting pools work for strollers and scooters.
• The Saratoga Automobile Museum at 110 Avenue of the Pines appeals to car-crazy kids.
• In winter, the park’s trails are good for sledding hills and snowshoe walks.

SPAC with kids

For a concert, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is surprisingly kid-friendly for its classical season. In 2026, children 16 and under were free on the lawn for New York City Ballet with an adult ticket, and children 12 and under were free on the lawn for most Philadelphia Orchestra performances. SPAC ran free Family Nights before some ballet performances, starting at 5:30 p.m. with lawn games, crafts, face painting and free ice cream from Stewart’s Shops. A sensory support space behind The Pinecone building was available during ballet and orchestra performances. Bring a blanket, a picnic and layers.

The racetrack with kids

A day at Saratoga Race Course can work well with children if you pick the right day. Weekdays are calmer than big Saturdays. In 2026, the Horse Sense area let fans of all ages meet and pet a retired thoroughbred on weekends during the meet. The backyard picnic area allows families to bring food and chairs, so you can set up a base. Across the street, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is a good indoor option for older children.

The lake

Saratoga Lake is a summer favorite. Ice cream at Ugly Ice Cream at Brown’s Beach on Route 9P and lunch at Lago by Druthers, which describes itself as family-friendly, make an easy afternoon. Life jackets are required for young children on boats.

Rainy days

When the weather turns, try:

• The children’s room at the Saratoga Springs Public Library downtown.
• The racing museum or the auto museum.
• A family show at Universal Preservation Hall, 25 Washington Street, when one is scheduled.
• Bowling at Saratoga Strike Zone.

Seasonal events

A few annual events are especially good with kids. The Victorian Streetwalk on Broadway, scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2026, includes a Santa parade, a tree lighting and visits with Santa. Chowderfest in early February includes family activities around downtown. The Beekman Street Art Fair each June has food trucks and a music tent.
