The Ugly Rooster Cafe in Malta is a breakfast and lunch restaurant at 2476 Route 9, in the former Malta Diner at the Route 9 roundabout just off Northway Exit 12. Ariel and Maggie Pagan opened the original Ugly Rooster in Mechanicville in 2009 and added the Malta cafe in 2021.
The plates are Mexican-inspired and heavy on cheese and bacon: eggs Benedict, omelets, breakfast burritos, pancakes the menu calls pannycakes, waffles and French toast, with soups, salads, sandwiches and quesadillas at lunch. Pagan trained as a pastry chef and worked in catering before opening his own cafe, and the family also runs Ugly Ice Cream at Brown’s Beach on Saratoga Lake in summer.
