Saratoga Springs in winter
This guide is for residents and visitors who want to enjoy Saratoga Springs between Thanksgiving and early spring, when the crowds are gone and the city belongs mostly to the people who live here. It covers the big winter events, what stays open, what changes, and how to handle parking and snow.
Why winter is worth it
Summer in Saratoga Springs is famous and crowded. Winter is quieter, cheaper and easier. Restaurant tables are easier to get, hotel rates drop, parking in city garages is free with time limits, and the downtown events that do happen feel local. The tradeoff is cold weather, shorter days and some seasonal businesses closed until spring.
The big winter events
Three downtown events anchor the season.
Victorian Streetwalk
The Downtown Business Association’s Victorian Streetwalk opens the holiday season on the first Thursday evening after Thanksgiving. The 40th Streetwalk is scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2026, from 6 to 9 p.m. along Broadway. The evening includes a Santa parade, the city tree lighting at 6 p.m. in front of Putnam Market, performers along Broadway and dancers in shop windows. It is free. During the Streetwalk, the Festival of Trees at the Saratoga Springs City Center has displayed more than 250 decorated trees and wreaths as a fundraiser for Catholic Charities.
New Year’s Eve
Downtown hosts a New Year’s Eve celebration with live entertainment and fireworks, according to Discover Saratoga. Details are announced each fall.
Chowderfest
Chowderfest, run by Discover Saratoga, is the city’s signature winter event. In 2026, the 27th Chowderfest ran on Saturday, February 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with roughly 80 restaurants and businesses around Saratoga County serving 4-ounce cups of chowder for $2 each. Broadway was closed to cars from Lake Avenue to Washington Street, free shuttles ran from the Saratoga Casino Hotel, and visitors voted for favorites through the Discover Saratoga app. Expect the 2027 event on a Saturday in early February.
Tips for Chowderfest:
- Arrive when it opens. Popular chowders run out, and lines grow by midday.
- Bring small bills, since most tastes are $2.
- Use the shuttle or park at the edge of downtown and walk.
- Explore past Broadway. Participating restaurants outside downtown often have shorter lines.
Winter outdoors
Snow does not shut the city down. Good winter outings include:
- Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in Saratoga Spa State Park, which stays open all year.
- A winter walk through Congress Park and the East Side, where the Victorian houses look their best under snow.
- Ice fishing on Saratoga Lake, but only when local conditions are known to be safe.
Winter indoors
When it is too cold to stay out, the city has plenty inside.
- The Saturday farmers market moves indoors to the Lincoln Baths at 65 South Broadway from November through April, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Museums stay open, including the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore. Check winter hours.
- Live music continues at Caffe Lena on Phila Street and at Universal Preservation Hall on Washington Street.
Parking and snow
The city’s summer paid-parking program ends at Labor Day, so downtown garages are free with time limits in winter. Two winter rules to know:
- The Putnam Street garage has banned all parking from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. between November 1 and April 1.
- The upper deck of the Walton Street garage has closed nightly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. for maintenance.
After snowstorms, the city may restrict street parking for plowing. Watch city alerts, especially if you live downtown or on the older grid.
What closes
Winter changes the lake most. Many lake restaurants, marinas and rentals shorten hours or close for the season, and the racetrack is quiet until the next meet. SPAC’s main season is summer. Downtown restaurants and shops mostly stay open, though some trim hours in January and February.
