Curtis Lumber, Inc.

Curtis Lumber is a family-owned lumber and building supply company headquartered at 885 Route 67, about a mile south of the village of Ballston Spa. Elmer A. Curtis bought a sawmill on Charlton Road in 1890, and six generations later the company has 23 stores across eastern New York and Vermont, from Delhi to Burlington, making it the largest independent lumber and building supply company in New York and northern Vermont, according to The Daily Gazette.

Robert K. Curtis added retail and hardware in the 1950s, began buying small-town lumberyards in the 1960s and moved the flagship from Charlton Road to Route 67 in 1976; the store grew to 130,000 square feet in 1990. Jay Curtis became president in 1992, and his daughter Kylie Curtis Holland has run day-to-day operations as executive vice president since 2021. The New York State Assembly added the company to the state’s Historic Business Preservation Registry.
